I wish they wouldn't have to though. sad.gif It discourages things like these and isn't as fun for many of us on the outside. How boring to only have screenshots from the publically downloadable Longhorn builds. It also reduces the buzz around the OS during its development.

I actually don't think it would be a problem, except that some idiots start assuming things about the OS. Like "M1 looks like Vista, so Windows 7 will be almost exactly like Vista!!!". tongue.gif So in that regard, yes, this can be a problem in theory. Although I didn't see it becoming such a problem with e.g. Windows XP or earlier operating systems, that also started out in very basic fashions too. I exclude Vista, because it could be harmed by the project "reboot" disgruntling users who saw what it could have been, and is a bit like a freak incident to me.

Another theoretical problem could be the stealing of ideas unveiled early, but then again, MS will have quite a head start as they've already started the project and don't lag behind through imitation. I've similarly also not noticed much of any problems in this sense with earlier operating systems. Sure, there were e.g. sidebars early, but I think it's a stretch to assume that's why Vista may have sold worse.

Idk...

Looking at it, it doesn't seem real. It is almost a carbon copy of vista, with some new numbers. And in the Windows 7 thing, it says 6.1. Kinda doesnt make sense when it is Windows 7, not 6.

Also...

No one but me finds Windows 7 Ultimate a bit unbelieveable?

If this was a M1 release, there would be no ultimate. There would be 1 version. Thats it. Not this Multi-version crap. That's not something you do till the end. In all of the Vista Beta's I tried (when it was Longhorn), I don't remember there being a Longhorn Ultimate right at the beginning. Do you?

My vote is fake. I could easily make these "screenshots" in Photoshop, probably in better quality too.

But thats just on persons opinion. We are all entitled to our own thoughts.

Why not? All builds of Vista during beta were Ultimate smile.gif

That's why I think it contributes to looking real. It's just a Milestone 1 / "alpha" release. Compare to the Longhorn M1 builds.

Who knows, maybe there's been a change of plans along with the new rather "early" H2 2009 plan, or maybe it's the reserved version number until MinWin gets implemented. I heard somewhere that MinWin had still not been readied for inclusion in Windows 7.
QUOTE

No, I find these things common enough... The SKU's may not have been decided upon yet, and they're probably just re-using graphics from Vista where possible. After all, this release isn't made to look "accurate" or anything. It's just built to have something that works for early feedback.
QUOTE
If this was a M1 release, there would be no ultimate.

It's probably just based on the Vista Ultimate Edition, i.e. not intentionally omitting certain features of the Windows Vista OS, as the other editions are subsets. I don't see much point in doing that anyway, so it seems logical to me that they then based it upon Ultimate, and in not caring for whatever it looks like, just reused the Ultimate branding. And there may indeed just be one edition of Windows 7 yet. There's nothing saying there isn't. I think one need to apply the "alpha mindset" here. Just because we have something odd called Ultimate doesn't automatically mean they have other editions, localized versions, or anything like that.
QUOTE

Now you're thinking forwards instead of thinking backwards. ;) The Ultimate branding belonged to the future, and the SKU's weren't finalized early on in Longhorn, so obviously it wasn't called like that. You need to think backwards in time when looking at early builds of a new Windows OS. You need to remember what OS they inherit from, and Longhorn inherited from XP (later Server 2003). It was called Windows Longhorn Professional at first, after Windows XP Professional. They may just have replaced the "XP" part with the "Longhorn" text and not caring more about that. This is just about alphas. Ulterior motives on marketing usually come much later than the very early tech previews.

Yes, sure, many probably could.

You have got o realise this is an early version. It probably is just at the moment Windows Vista running on top of the Windows7 kernel - thats all. Things like new GUI will be added later when its ready, they just testing the nuts and bolts before everything else.

I believe we will see something similar to the early longhorn builds - like the sidebar beign part of the shell etc.

The first build of Longhorn only had minor changes in the explorer, the bootscreen and the loginscreen. It was just XP with some very small features smile.gif The first build with some noticable changes was 3683, that one had more changes in Explorer and had a personalise screen like Vista RTM has..
After that build we met the sidebar and the plex theme, and I guess that was the M3 build.

Well, now there's more proof.

I doubt Microsoft will tolerate this.

Don't you remember the earlier Longhorn Betas? They were called "Longhorn XP Professional".

And I think enough people have confirmed that these are legit for us now.
